World-Class Programs; Exceptional Care

Through 11 hospitals and numerous specialty facilities, Memorial Hermann offers innovative technology and treatments, clinical excellence and the resources of our university-affiliated teaching hospital in the Texas Medical Center.

Founded more than 100 years ago, Memorial Hermann is known for world-class clinical expertise, patient-centered care, leading-edge technology and innovation. We provide continuous care for the greater Houston community with 11 hospitals, including three Heart & Vascular Institute locations, TIRR Memorial Hermann, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and eight suburban acute-care hospitals.

With an outstanding medical staff and more than 19,000 employees, the system operates five comprehensive cancer centers, 21 sports medicine and rehabilitation clinics, 24 easily accessible outpatient imaging centers, a chemical dependency treatment center, a Wellness Center, a home health agency, a retirement community and dozens of other specialty and outpatient programs located throughout southeast Texas.

Our size is important because it gives us the ability to make a real difference in the health of our community. In 2007, we gained even more national recognition for our programs, services and clinical capabilities, many of which are offered in affiliation with The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

Heart and Vascular Care

With 50 percent of Houston’s heart care specialists on active staff at our hospitals, we lead the way in specialty services and innovations in heart care. Our capabilities include off-pump coronary artery bypass, cardiac imaging, mitral valve repair, peripheral artery disease treatment, aneurysm repair, heart attack risk assessment programs, robotic-assisted surgery, and clinical trials and research. The three Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute locations – at our Texas Medical Center, Memorial City and Southwest Campuses – form the cornerstone of our comprehensive heart services. In 2007, six Memorial Hermann facilities received VHA Leadership Awards for Community Benefits Excellence and for Clinical Excellence, having achieved exceptionally high levels of performance in heart care. For three consecutive years, the Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-Texas Medical Center has been the only Houston facility named one of the nation’s top 100 cardiovascular hospitals in the Thomson 100 Top Hospitals? National Benchmarks for Success study.

Sports Medicine
Today’s athletes break records once considered untouchable. Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine programs build athletic frontrunners by helping them increase strength, speed, flexibility, coordination, cardiovascular endurance and overall conditioning, as well as providing comprehensive care following injury. Led by skilled orthopedic surgeons who are also team physicians for the Houston Texans, Houston Rockets, University of Houston, University of St. Thomas and Rice University athletics, the program delivers individualized care and customized human performance services through a state-of-the-art facility in the Texas Medical Center. Athletes of all abilities can benefit from our programs at 21 conveniently located area clinics across the Greater Houston area.

Robotic-assisted surgery takes minimally invasive surgery to a new level, enhancing the surgeon’s capabilities and improving patient outcomes, with less post-operative pain, faster recovery, reduced blood loss, less scarring and a shorter hospital stay. Two of our da Vinci? Surgical Systems are used for clinical procedures; the third is housed at the Memorial Hermann Surgical Innovation and Robotics Institute, one of the largest sites for robotic surgery in the nation. More than 1,000 surgeons, nurses and support staff from across the country and around the world have learned to put innovative surgical technology to work at the Institute.

Through our integrated network, Memorial Hermann delivers comprehensive neurological and neurosurgical treatment options to more patients than any other healthcare system in Houston. The cornerstone of our program is the Mischer Neuroscience Institute, which brings together a team of world-class clinicians, researchers and educators whose work is transforming the field of neuroscience. Patients come to MNI from around the world for the treatment of rare and common diseases of the brain and spinal cord. Annually awarded millions of dollars for neurological research, MNI is routinely among the first to administer new drugs and apply new techniques. Our Stroke Center, founded in 1988, was one of the first dedicated stroke programs in the world and the first Joint Commission-accredited primary stroke center in the region. Today, we staff the 10-county greater Houston area’s only dedicated on-site stroke team, using leading-edge imaging technology to treat more than 700 patients annually. Here, neurosurgeons provide coordinated care to patients with aneurysms, carotid occlusive disease and vascular malformations. The Institute offers access to advanced technologies for treatment, including the Leksell Gamma Knife? and MEG.

Cancer Care
Memorial Hermann Cancer Centers provide a full continuum of diagnostic and treatment services, including targeted anticancer drugs, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), prostate seed implantation and the MammoSite? Radiation Therapy System. With five centers accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, our broad geographical coverage makes treatment accessible to patients regardless of where they live or work. Along with therapies that offer improved efficacy and reduced toxicity, our team of healthcare providers is focused on providing an optimal treatment experience through a patient-designed program called the Cancer Experience, which fosters courage and perseverance.

Named to the U.S.News & World Report list of “America’s Best Hospitals” for 18 consecutive years, TIRR Memorial Hermann has achieved worldwide renown for excellence in rehabilitation research and treatment for catastrophic injuries and illnesses, including traumatic brain injury and stroke, spinal cord injury, amputations, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological diseases and disorders. We are one of only six rehabilitation hospitals in the nation designated as Model Systems by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research for both our spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury programs. TIRR Memorial Hermann also offers innovative outpatient programs at the interdisciplinary Kirby Glen Center, a 22,000-square-foot, high-tech facility located on South Braeswood in Houston.

As a full-service dedicated children’s facility, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital focuses exclusively on young patients’ needs. A recent facility expansion increased capacity to 240 beds, making ours one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the United States. Even the tiniest patients benefit from our comprehensive range of pediatric specialties and subspecialties, and our affiliation with The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) has named our extracorporeal membrane oxygenation program a “Designated Center of Excellence” for 2006-2008. Only five other ECMO programs in the world carry that distinction. And now, Memorial Hermann is introducing at our suburban hospitals throughout the greater Houston area the same high standards of quality for which our flagship children’s hospital in the Texas Medical Center is known. That means newborns and children of all ages can receive skilled children’s healthcare services close to home. And, if a higher level of care is required, our Children’s Transport Team – comprised of specially trained nurses and neonatal and pediatric intensive care physicians – stands ready to transport our young patients to Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital or to another appropriate Memorial Hermann facility via ground or Life Flight? air ambulance.

Organ Transplantation
Memorial Hermann was the site of Houston’s first liver transplant in 1985. Thanks to innovative procedures and groundbreaking medical and surgical advances, we remain a leader in transplant medicine, with outcomes that surpass national expected survival rates. Surgeons here performed the first pancreas transplant in Texas and participated in studies of the life-saving immunosuppressive drugs cyclosporine and rapamycin. Today, we offer a multidisciplinary approach to patient care for pediatric and adult transplantation of the liver, kidney, pancreas and small bowel. Our innovations include transplantation for cancer, living-related donor transplants, split liver transplants and multi-organ transplants. In 2006, three transplant surgeons on staff at Memorial Hermann performed the first four-organ transplant in the city and the fourth in the nation.

Memorial Hermann Life Flight
Memorial Hermann Life Flight air ambulance service has completed more than 110,000 missions since its inception in 1976, including 3,146 rotor-wing flights and 11 fixed-wing flights in 2007. Founded and led by James “Red” Duke, M.D., its first and only medical director, Life Flight was the first such program to operate in Texas and the second in the United States. As Houston’s only hospital-based air ambulance program, Life Flight offers a full continuum of care from rescue call to patient discharge. In early 2007, the Memorial Hermann Foundation initiated a $40 million fundraising campaign to update the Life Flight fleet of helicopters, currently the busiest in the country and the only area program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems. The new helicopters expand our fleet from four to six. They are faster, larger, safer, quieter and better equipped, and will cut response time by as much as 33 percent.
