Established in 1876, Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) is the second-oldest public institution of higher education in the state of Texas. PVAMU offers baccalaureate degrees, master’s degrees and doctoral degree programs through eight colleges and schools. Over the course of its 132-year history, PVAMU has conferred more than 53,500 degrees and continues to fulfill its purpose as a land-grant institution.
The University offers a diverse range of academic disciplines to its undergraduate students, including architecture, business, computer science, criminal justice, education, engineering, the humanities, mathematics, nursing and the social sciences. The University also offers terminal degrees in clinical adolescent psychology, educational leadership, electrical engineering and juvenile justice.
Students enjoy many options for showcasing their talents through the University’s student organizations and academic programs. Each year, the PVAMU Student Government Association promotes student participation in Homecoming and other campus celebrations.
PVAMU has a wide selection of intercollegiate athletic sports programs. Men’s sports programs include baseball, basketball, cross country, football and track & field. Women’s sports programs include bowling, basketball, softball, tennis, track & field and volleyball.
PVAMU has produced some of top leaders at the state, national and international levels. PVAMU graduates include Julius Wesley Becton Jr. (Ren. Lt. Gen. of the U.S. Army), David L. Brewer III (Ret. V. Admiral of the U.S. Navy), the first licensed African American female in Texas Nathelyne Archie Kennedy, former U.S. Congressman Craig Anthony Washington, NFL Hall of Fame Inductee Kenneth Ray Houston, U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Frederick Newhouse and legendary blues recording artist Charles Brown.
